You can leave the batteries in the battery compartment.
Remove both screws.
Please look closely at the image of the opened up unit to see how the case is held together even without the screws. There are four spots where it is latched together, and you have to carefully break it up by pressing with a small screwdriver between the two halves of the unit, and also pressing the front part of the unit with your thumb.
You can start at the top, then unlatch the two sides, and then you should be able to take it apart easily.
It does take some violence, but the unit can stand that.
Any small ON/OFF type of switch will do (don't use a pushbutton that would need to be constantly depressed for sound). The switch needs only two connectors. Mine has six but I only use two.
You normally need a soldering iron for this work. Use the smallest one you can get (15W is enough).
Buy the switch and the iron from a store specializing in electronic components, not the normal electric store.
Interrupt one of the two wires that go to the speaker and connect the two open ends to the switch.
It's probably a good idea to fasten the switch with some glue.
You can even use the soldering iron to make a hole into the unit. Use a knife to remove the bulge so the hole looks nice even though it was made with a soldering iron ;=) .
Insulate the
switch's connectors so that there is no risk of a short-circuit - the
battery compartment's contact is nearby!
I forgot to insulate mine, but next time I'd definitely do that.
